The Lives of Joanna and Jacqueline Pollock

John and Florence Pollock owned and managed a small grocery business and a milk delivery service in England. John Pollock was born in 1920 in Bristol, England and his family attended the Church of England. In adulthood, he, along with Florence, joined the Roman Catholic Church. They had two daughters who were tragically killed in childhood.

Their first daughter, Joanna, was born on March 25, 1946, while the family was still living in the city of Bristol. The family then moved to the town of Whickham where they had a large detached house that had gardens and orchards. When Joanna was 4 years old, the family moved to the village of Hexham, where their second daughter Jacqueline was born on April 13, 1951.

As both parents worked, the girls were raised by Florence’s mother, who lived with the family. While delivering milk, Florence would wear a particular smock to protect her cloths from getting wet.

Joanna and Jacqueline were very close to one another and always did things together. Joanne, who was 5 years older than Jacqueline, tended to “mother” her younger sister, who accepted Joanne’s guidance and leadership.

Jacqueline Incurs a Scar on Her Right Forehead

When Jacqueline was 3 years old, she fell and hit her forehead on the rim of a bucket, which resulted in a laceration that required 3 stitches. A scar resulted which was located on her right forehead near the root of her nose. This scar would become more pronounced in cold weather.

Joanna loved to write and produce little plays for which she would wear costumes to enact her dramas. Both Joanna and Jacqueline enjoyed combing the hair of others, especially the hair of their father. The girls also loved to play on the swings located in a park in Hexam.

The Sisters are Killed on a Sidewalk by a Deranged Driver

On the morning of the May 5, 1957, the girls were walking from their home to their church in Hexam in order to attend Sunday School. Suddenly, a woman deliberately drove her car onto the sidewalk that the girls were walking on. There was a wall along the sidewalk which prevented a means to escape away from the street. The car struck the sisters and killed them instantly. Joanna was 11 and Jacqueline was 6 years old when they died.

It was later learned that in a custody dispute with her husband, the driver who killed the girls had her own children forcibly taken from her. Apparently, this woman felt that if she could not possess her children, no one else should have any children. She was later confined to a psychiatric hospital.

After the deaths of her daughters, Florence quit delivering milk and her smock was stored away. Similarly, the girls’ toys and dolls were placed in a box for storage.

Sisters Reincarnate as Identical Twin Girls

Florence became pregnant again in the beginning of 1958. With the pregnancy, despite his Christian background, John was certain that Florence would have twins and that their deceased daughters would be reborn to them. Florence’s doctor insisted that she would have one child, not twins. Florence did not believe in reincarnation and dismissed her husband’s belief that Joanne and Jacqueline would reincarnate within their family.

Nonetheless, on October 4, 1958, a year and a half after their daughters were killed, Florence did indeed have identical twin girls, who were named Gilliam and Jennifer. They were born in Hexam. Both girls had a flat, dark mole on the left flank, just above the hip, which could be explained by their identical genetic makeup.

Past Life Birthmark: Jennifer has a Birthmark at the Same Site as Jacqueline’s Forehead Scar

Jennifer also had a birthmark on her right forehead at the root of her nose, the same spot where Jacqueline incurred a scar when her head struck the bucket. Gilliam did not have a scar on her head. As such, the birthmark on Jennifer’s forehead could not be explained by genetics. Like with Jacqueline, Jennifer’s scar became more visible in cold weather. Due to this birthmark on her head, it was speculated that Jennifer may be the reincarnation of Jacqueline.

When the twins were 9 months old, the family moved from Hexam to a town called Whitley Bay. This is where the twins grew up.

Gilliam Recognizes Jacqueline’s Past Life Birthmark

The girls started to speak coherently when they were three years old.  At about this age, Gillian spontaneously pointed to the birthmark on Jennifer’s forehead and said:

“That is the mark Jennifer got when she fell on the bucket.” In her contemporary life, Jennifer had not had any injury that would explain the scar.  Jacqueline, on the other hand, had fallen on a bucket and incurred a head wound that required stitches and resulted in a scar in the same anatomical place.

Gilliam and Jennifer Identify and Claim their Past Life Dolls

When the twins were 3 or 4 years old, John and Florence took out the box of toys that had belonged to their deceased daughters. The toys were taken out and were lying around. Spontaneously, Gillian claimed a doll that had belonged to Joanna and Jennifer claimed a doll that belonged to Jacqueline. The dolls were markedly different.

Further, the twins said that Santa Clause had given the dolls to them and indeed, the dolls had been given to Joanna and Jacqueline as Christmas presents.

This furthered the speculation that Gilliam was the reincarnation of the older deceased sister, Joanna, and that Jennifer was the reincarnation of the younger sister, Jennifer.

Gilliam Recognizes her Past Life Toy Laundry Wringer

Another item that was removed from the box was a toy, miniature laundry wringer. Before the advent of electrically driven clothes dryers, wringers were used to squeeze water from washed clothes. The toy wringer had belonged to the older sister, Joanna.

When Gillian saw the toy she immediately burst forward and claimed it as hers. She said: “Look! There is my toy wringer.” She added that this toy wringer was also was a Christmas present, which was true for the life of Joanna.

Past Life Memories: The Twins Remember the Swings at a Park In Hexam and their Fatal Past Life Accident

John Pollack stated that when the twins were 4 years old, they spoke about the swings in the park at Hexam. Recall that the family moved from Hexam to Whitely Bay when they were only 9 months old, so they would have no memory of swings at Hexam by normal means.

Florence said that she had heard Gillian and Jennifer more than once talking to each other about the fatal accident of Joanna and Jacqueline. Florence noted that when they spoke about the fatal accident, it seemed it they were speaking in present time. John noted that when they spoke about the fatal accident, it seemed as they were reliving it.

John reported another incident in which Gillian and Jennifer were in an enclosed or dead-end alley near their house, that had an automobile parked in it. When the driver of the car got in and started the engine to back out of the alley, Gillian and Jennifer immediately clung tightly to each other and cringed at one side of the alley. John observed that they seem terrified. The conjecture was that the incident reminded Joanna | Gilliam and Jacqueline | Jennifer of their fatal accident, in which they had no means of escape.

Past Life Behaviors

The twins seemed to mirror the behavior of the deceased sisters. For example, Gillian and Jennifer were extremely close, like Joanna and Jacqueline, and if one of them was given a disciplinary spank, the other one would cry.

The twins tended to look toward their maternal grandmother for guidance and care, just as Joanna and Jacqueline had done, which was inappropriate at the time since Florence was no longer working and had more time to spend with her young girls than she did with her deceased ones.

The twins enjoyed combing the hair of other people, especially their father’s, much like Joanna and Jacqueline. Gillian tended to mother Jennifer and Jennifer accepted Gillian’s leadership, much as was the relationship between Joanna and Jacqueline

Florence noted that her deceased daughters, Joanna and Jaqueline, were careless about crossing streets. In contrast, Gillian and Jennifer were very cautious in these situations. They would stop and hold their mother’s hands while crossing the road.  Florence thought the twins had a much stronger fear of approaching vehicles than other children of their age.

Gillian also showed an early interest in acting and like to utilize costumes, much like Joanna.

Geographic Memory: The Twins know the Location of a Past Life Park and Swings

When the twins were 4 years old, the family took a trip from Whitely Bay to their former town of Hexam. As they were walking along the road which led to the park, even before the park was in sight, Gillian and Jennifer said that they wanted to go across the road to go  to the park and play on the swings. John and Florence were surprised at this statement of the twins, as they could not have known about the park with swings as they had never been there before. The twins were 9 months old when the family moved from Hexan, so they had no opportunity to play in the park. It seemed that the twins were recalling events from the lives of the deceased girls.

Past Life Memories: Jennifer Recognizes the Smock Florence wore Prior to the Death of the Sisters

When the twins were 4 and a half years old, their father, John Pollock, was getting ready to do some painting of their house. John took out of storage the smock that Florence had used in their milk delivery business and put it on, to protect his clothes from being soiled with paint. Jennifer, the younger twin, seeing him with the smock on, said:  “Why are you wearing mom’s coat?”

When Gillian, the older twin, did not seem to recognize the smock, Jennifer became annoyed with her sister. Gillian’s unrecognition of the smock can be explained as in Gilliam’s past life as Joanna, she would have been in school when her mother came home from work and took off the smock. As such, Joanna would rarely see her mother’s smock.

In contrast, Jacqueline, as the younger daughter, was still at home and was being cared for by her maternal grandmother when Florence came home from work wearing her smock.

When John heard Jennifer saying that the smock belonged to her mother, he asked her how she knew this. Jennifer said that her mother had worn the smock when delivering milk, which was true.

Past Life Memories: The Twins Recall Having Lunch at School in Hexam

When the twins were six years old, they complained about the food that Florence had prepared for them for lunch. Florence then retorted that if they did not like the food at home, they could have lunch at their school.

The twins replied: “Well, we have done that before.” When Florence asked where they had lunch at school, the twins replied in Hexam. Florence challenged them by saying that they had never gone to school in Hexam, as the twins had grown up in Whitley Bay. Still, the twins insisted that they had lunch at the school at Hexam, which would have been accurate for the deceased sisters.

In Adulthood, Gilliam Describes her Past Life Home in Whickham

In 1981, when Gillian was 23 years old, she described to her father, John, of an inner vision she had in which she described playing in a sandpit in the garden of the large detached house. She gave a detailed description of the house and its gardens, lawns and orchards. This description accurately described a house that the family had occupied in Whickham. Recall that the family had left this house in Whickham when the deceased daughter Joanne was 4 years old.

Gillian believed she had lived in this house when she was a young child, but her father tried to explain to her that she had never lived in the Whickham house in her current lifetime. Though logically, Gilliam should have understood this as a past life memory from her lifetime as Joanne, it was difficult for her to comprehend this.

The Pollocks leave the Roman Catholic Church due to Parishioners’ Hostility Towards Reincarnation

When the twin’s past life cases were featured in local newspapers and magazines in the 1960s, John and Florence Pollack received nasty letters from the parishioners of their church, who rejected the concept of reincarnation. As a result, John and Florence left the Roman Catholic Church.

Though Florence, at the time of the birth of her twins herself rejected the premise that John forwarded that their babies were the reincarnations of their deceased daughters, based on the statements the twins had made, she accepted that the twins were the reincarnations of Joanna and Jacqueline.

During World War I, General Werner Seehofer Walks into Enemy Fire

Werner Seehofer was born in Bratislava, Slovania on Auguest 14, 1868. At that time, Bratislava was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. When he became old enough, Werner joined the Austrian Imperial Army.

He lived in Vienna for a period of time and gradually rose in rank. By 1902, Werner was a Colonel and he was assigned to a post in Linz, Austria, IISISReincarnationResearchWWIMachineGunwhere he remained until 1907. By January 1918, he had become a General and was assigned as the Commander of a Division on the Italian front in World War I.

On June 17, 1918, inexplicably, Werner left his headquarters and continued walking until he was beyond the front line. Numerous Austrian soldiers warned Werner from going further, but he ignored their pleas.

It is unclear what happened next, but newspapers reported that Werner was wounded and became a prisoner of the Italian army. He was thought to have died in an Italian army hospital soon after his capture, at the age of 48. In retrospect, it was thought that Werner had developed a mental disorder which impaired his judgment, prompting him to walk into the hands of the Italian enemy.

Past Life Memories: Helmut Krause Remembers his Past Life Address in Linz

Helmut Krause was born in Linz, Austria, on June 1, 1931, about 13 years after Werner had died. From the age of 4, Helmut spoke frequently about a past lifetime. Helga Ullrich was a family friend who often brought Helmet home from kindergarten. One day, Helmet told Helga:

Helmut had a marked fear of loud noises, like gunshots, which may have been related to Werner’s experiences in World War I and the injury he suffered, which led to his death.

Principles of Reincarnation & Understanding Past Lives

The strength of this case rests on Helmut’s ability to name three specific addresses related to Werner Seehofer’s lifetime, which were factually verified. Helmut identified Werner’s address in Linz, his specific address in Vienna and the address of Werner’s in laws in Linz.

Helmut also behaved like a World War I officer, even though no family members were soldiers. Helmut’s father was a biologist and there were no contemporary role models who could have prompted Helmut’s military behavior.

This reincarnation case, if accepted, demonstrates the following feature:

“My earliest memories in childhood included detailed images of a time when women wore long billowing gowns and people still used horse drawn carriages. I remembered specifically a large sandstone house, a man named Fred, friends arriving for social gatherings, a large reception area with a high ceiling and floors of white stone.

Central to all this I remembered most a woman that was the center of all related activity. The mystery lady was the center of several scenes that were repeated again and again during my earliest years and continued even to this day. I used to wonder who these people were and wondered why they appeared so real to me.

It was the only way I had as a child to explain the vividness of these people I visited in my dreams. However, these people never did appear in this current life and I remained at a loss to explain their appearance in my mind. Wayne, who was born in 1942, reflects that these memories were especially odd since in the 1940’s, there was no television, nor did he any see motion pictures, that might have fueled his imagination. He reflects that nothing in his real time experience of a small town in central Wisconsin correlated to his visions. Clothing, houses and social manners were entirely different in Wisconsin than what he experienced in his memories.

Yet a man named Fred, women in billowing gowns transported in horse drawn carriages and the large sandstone house, were very real to little Wayne. Perplexed, Wayne asked his mother about these people and the house that he remembered. He asked if he had been ever taken to such a place as an infant. The answer was always no. Though he could not explain the source of his memories, these memories continued to be a source of comfort, and he maintained a nostalgic emotion for a person named Fred.

A Flashback of a Past Lifetime on Fifth Avenue in New York City in Front of the Old Vanderbilt House

Let us now allow Wayne to narrate the scene, as he stood on the sidewalk of Fifth Avenue:

All my attention focused on this strange woman moving in my direction through the crowd. In my mind I was someone else, someone named Louise. I believed the woman moving toward me was an old friend, but the face did not look familiar.

Nevertheless, there was a great relief within my mind, I thought that finally someone recognized the real me. Not the young man from Wisconsin, but a woman named Louise. It was as if I had been a victim of amnesia and suddenly someone shocked me into reality. Unfortunately, the moment of intense excitement passed when the woman in the hat and gloves brushed past me and grabbed an elderly woman standing directly behind me.

Embarrassed and bewildered, I returned to my hotel room. In the hotel I relaxed on the bed and for some hours pondered what had just happened. Why, I kept wondering, did I think I was Louise? Why was it so real to me and so important that I be Louise? I pondered this strange experience during my entire stay in New York, but found no answer until years later. Nonetheless, I was content that I was Louise in a past life about the turn of the century and that Fred was my husband.”

Wayne feels Past Life Frustration due to Fred’s Shyness

“What I knew of Louise and Fred was not only a few visions from this presumed past life, but I could feel emotions that were from Louise. I intuitively knew she was often frustrated with Frederick at social events. Louise would be in the huge reception area of the house greeting guests. She wore several dresses that I could remember in great detail. I always envisioned Fred in white tie and jacket with tails. He appeared to be perfectly comfortable dressed in that attire. but whenever possible he escaped to the small office/library. I can vividly remember the library door. Inside the library it would be quiet and Fred would be seated in the high backed sofa that hid him from the view of anyone at the doorway exit. Eventually, Louise grew tired of making excuses to the guests about Fred’s absence.”

Mary said that they would have a wonderful time and added that her friend Gloria would be joining them also.

Wayne asked, “Gloria who?” Mary replied, “It’s my friend Gloria Vanderbilt.” Let us allow Wayne describe his reaction to this statement regarding Gloria Vanderbilt, whose photo is provided to the right:

“Instantly my logical mind was again paralyzed just as it had been years before when in New York City that elderly woman shouted the name Louise. Another personality or another identity took over my consciousness and I said, ‘Great, Gloria and I can chat and gossip about our family relatives.’

There was a silence from my friend Mary and I began to realize what I had just said. Mary asked what I meant by common family relatives and I babbled nervously about something while trying to think up any good excuse for my ridiculous statement.

Eventually, I explained that I thought Gloria had an interesting family tree. After terminating that conversation I realized that for a few moments I was transported into another life. It was so total that I really believed I was a relative of Gloria Vanderbilt and we could indeed gossip about family members. Why, I kept wondering again, why did I say such a stupid thing with such conviction?”

“In the days that followed my conversation with Mary I began to wonder if there ever could have been a Frederick and Louise Vanderbilt. No, I reasoned the odds against it were simply too remote to even bother to explore. Nevertheless, some weeks later while wandering in my favorite bookstore, my attention was attracted to a book on the wealthy families of the 1800’s and early 1900’s. I noticed the book only because it was on the lowest shelf and protruding into the aisle by some 4 to 5 inches.

For whatever reasons, I could not give up the book although my mind wanted to place it back on the shelf. As I could not get my hand to release the book, I reasoned I had to buy it in order to leave the store. When I tried to give the book to the cashier so that he could make the sale, the cashier had to pull with both of his hands to dislodge the book from my grasp, despite my desire to let go of it. After paying for the book, I was angry with myself for having no self-control over purchasing a book I did not want. I took the book home and placed it on my own bookshelf thinking that this is one book that I will probably never read, and therefore it was a total waste of money.”

Wayne also read that though their sandstone Hyde Park mansion (pictured near the top of this page) was their favorite, their main home was on Fifth Avenue, in New York City. Though this home in NYC was torn down, the location that Wayne had his “Louise” experience on Park Avenue as a young man indeed the location where the Vanderbilt home had been located on Fifth Avenue. Wayne also learned that Louise and Frederick were very interested in metaphysics, including Theosophy, as is Wayne in contemporary times. In his current incarnation, Wayne is a scholar of the work of Alice Bailey. Louise was also a great fan of the grand ladies of 18th century France, especially Marie Antoinette. Louise Vanderbilt had even filled her bedroom with French reproduction furniture.

This has significance in relation to another past lifetime that has been identified for Wayne, that of Claude Ledoux, who was an artist and architect associated in the Court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. The Murder of a Farmer and his Pregnant Wife

He grew fruits and vegetables and he did well enough to own two houses. He was also able to hire others to help him work his land.

Abit married twice. His first wife, Hatice, did not bear children, so he took a second wife, Sehide, who had five children with him. Abit had his two wives live separately in his two houses. The houses were 350 meters apart.

On January 31, 1957, Abit, at his home where Sehide lived, was told by one of his employees that one of his farm animals was sick. Sehide was nine months pregnant at the time and was starting to go into labor. Abit went with the employee to the stable to tend to the animal. As Abit leaned down to examine the animal, he was struck in the head with a heavy hammer. Abit was killed by this blow to the head when he was about 45 years old.

Spirit Being & Soul Plan: An Announcing Dream of Abit Returning

Mehmet Altinkilc and his wife, Nebihe, lived in the Midik section of Adana, Turkey. A neighbor, Fatma Tanrisven, who lived a few hundred meters or yards from the Altinkilc family, had a dream that involved the Altinkilcs.

Three men walking along the road outside the Altinkilc home called out to Abit and asked him to come out of the house. Abit replied:

“No, I am going to stay here, I will not come back.” (1)

Fatma told her husband, Mahmut, about the dream and the next day he went to the home of Mehmet Altinkilc to share the dream with him. It turned out that Nebihe, Mehmet’s wife, was pregnant. Neither Fatma or Mahmut knew that Nebihe was expecting a child.

Once Mahmut learned that Nebihe was pregnant, he interpreted his wife’s dream to mean that Nebihe’s child would be a boy and that he would be Abit Suzulmus reincarnated. Mahmut told Mehmet and Nebihe Altinkilc about his wife’s dream and his prediction that Abit would be born to them.

Mehmet knew who Abit Suzulmus was, not only from the publicity that resulted from the murders, but also because Mehmet and Abit had some business dealings in the past. To Mehmet, though, Abit was just an acquaintance, not a friend. During the investigation of this reincarnation case, Mehmet stated that he did not know personal details of Abit’s life. For example, Mehmet stated that he did not know the names of Abit’s children or other family members.

Validation of Ismail Altinkilic’s Past Life Memories

Nebihe Altinkilic did have a son who was born on September 30, 1957, nine months after Abit Suzulmus was murdered. Mehmet and Nebihe named him Ismail. When he was one and a half years old, just after he started talking and walking, Ismail started to speak about his past lifetime as Abit Suzulmus.

Before Ismail’s many past life memories are shared, let me explain that Ian Stevenson methodically validated these statements as being historically correct. In his book, Cases of the Reincarnation Type: Lebanon and Turkey, Stevenson presents an extensive, 15 page table in which he identifies which witnesses or other objective sources, such as police records, that were used to validate Ismail’s memories. Past Life Memories: Ismail Speaks of his Life and Murder as Abit Suzulmus

Mehmet, Ismail’s father, related that as soon as Ismail was able to speak fluently, he spoke of his past lifetime as Abit Suzulmus. R. Bayer, who was a colleague of Ian Stevenson, tape-recorded Mehmet’s description of the turn of events. A portion of the transcription is provided below:

“One evening I had come in from work very tired and had stretched out on a sofa. Ismail was sitting beside me and came over and sat on me. Being very tired, I said, in order to get rid of him:

‘Ismail, I am terribly tired. Go away.’

He replied:

‘No, no. I am not Ismail. I am Abit.’

And he replied:

‘Yes, Papa. Yes, yes. Gulseren, Zeki and Hikmet.’

He also said that he was owed debts by various persons, mentioning Saban, Abdurrezzak, and another person of Akkapi [another district of Adana]. He also complained of our poverty, and added the he hoped that debtors would pay up.” (3)

Ismail also described to his father how Abit was murdered. Ismail said that Ramazan had told him that an ox was lame, which is why he, Abit went to the stable.

Ismail explained to his father that as Abit, he had two wives, as his first wife could not bear children. He also said that his wife Sehide was very beautiful. He said that he worked as a vegetable farmer and that in his garden, he had fruit trees, including orange and quince trees.

Ismail said that as Abit he had cows and that one cow was named “Susan.” He said that in his past incarnation he had two horses. In the stable, Ismail said that he had a fodder barrel and that he has placed a bed in the stable. Ian Stevenson was able to verify that all these past life memories were correct.

Geographic Past Life Memory: Ismail finds his Past Life Home

Abit’s family heard about Ismail’s claims and Abit’s surviving wife, Hatice, and his daughter, Gulseren, came to visit him at the home of Mehmet and Nebihe. Ismail developed very strong emotional bonds to them.

When Ismail was three years old, Mehmet decided to see if Ismail could find the home of Abit. Recall that Abit lived in the Bey district of Adana and Mehmet and his family lived in the Midik district. The distance between the Bey and Midik districts is about 2 kilometers or a little over one mile.

Though Abit had two homes, Ismail correctly led the way over a distance of 2 kilometers directly to the house where Abit was murdered, even though Ismail in his contemporary lifetime had never been to Abit’s homes. There, he recognized people that Abit knew and recognized places related to Abit.

This is reminiscent of the Anne Frank | Barbro Karlen case, as Barbro, at 10 years of age, was able to lead her parents from their hotel through the winding streets of Amsterdam directly to the Anne Frank House, though she had never been to Amsterdam before. The Frank | Karlen case also shows that facial features can remain consistent from one lifetime to another, and that religion, nationality and ethnic affiliation can change from one incarnation to another.

Past Life Memories: Uncle Mahmut gets Goose Bumps when Ismail describes their Drinking Parties with Women

He identified one drinking buddy as being Abdurrezzak, which was true. Abdurrezzak Baydar did indeed drink raki with Abit.

He also said that he would drink raki every night with his uncle, whose name was Mahmut Altinkilic. Ismail explained that he, as Abit, and his Uncle Mahmut worked the fruit and vegetable fields together. In addition, they jointly owned a garden and that they would have drinking parties in. Ismail noted that when he and Mahmut would drink, they would snack on sama.

Further, Ismail said that he, as Abit, and Uncle Mahmut would invite women to their drinking parties.

When Mahmut Altinkilic heard Abit describe that they had women over for the parties, he said he developed goose bumps. Mahmut explained that he was sure that no one other than Abit and he knew about the women that they invited to their parties in the garden. It was this very personal secret that Ismail knew, which could not be explained except by Ismail being the reincarnation of Abit, that made Mahmut’s flesh react in this way.

Past Life Memories: Ismail Remembers People Who owed him Money in his Prior Lifetime as Abit

Ismail told his father that at the time that he died as Abit, that several individuals owed him money. He said that two of the people who owed him money were named Abdurezzak and Sabit.

Abdurezzak Baydar admitted that at the time of Abit’s death, he owed Abit 200 Turkish lira and Sabit Devici stated that he owed 200-300 Turkish lira to Abit when he died. Again, Ismail’s memories were correct.

When Sabit Devici learned about Ismail’s claim to be the reincarnation of Abit, Sabit sought him out. Sabit had never met Ismail before and Ismail, in his contemporary incarnation, had never met Sabit. Sabit first met Ismail when Ismail was without his mother, father or others who could have identified Sabit. Sabit asked Ismail who he was and Ismail replied, “Sabit.” (4)

Past Life Memories: Ismail Spontaneously Recognizes his Past Life Friend, Rasit, the Ice Cream Seller

Ismail went to Rasit and not only identified Rasit, but he also told Rasit the names of his wife and several children. Rasit was impressed with Ismail’s recognition of him as Rasit lived in the Bey district, while Ismail saw him in the Medik district, where he sold ice cream. Rasit didn’t think anyone knew him in the Medik district.

Ismail also referred to Rasit as a “kirve.” This has significance as Abit was a close friend of Rasit and was to serve as the “kirve,” or sponsor, of the circumcision ceremony for Rasit’s son. In calling Rasit a kirve, Ismail appears to have gotten the roles reversed when Abit was alive, but still, he was accurate in identifying Rasit by name and referring to a role that had significance to Rasit and his past life friend, Abit.

Ismail was also able to spontaneously identify Rasit’s son, Ali Tathci. Upon seeing this man, Ismail said:

“That man is called Ali, and I worked with him.” (5)

Ali worked with his father selling ice cream, but he also had worked for Abit in his vegetable and fruit fields.

Past Life Memories: Ismail Recognizes Abit’s Chair and Accurately Admits a Debt

Abit regularly visited a shop owned by brothers whose family name was Kapiciobul. As Abit visited the shop on a daily basis, he complained that there was no chair for him. In response, a chair was brought in specifically for Abit, for him to sit in when he visited the shop.

When the Kapiciobul brothers had heard about Ismail’s claims to be the reincarnation of Abit Suzulmus, they sent word to Ismail’s father to bring him to the shop, so that they could meet him.

To test Ismail, one of the brothers named Ibrahim asked Ismail:

“Do I owe you money?” Ismail replied, “No, on the contrary, I owe you 100 lira.” (6)

Ismail’s statement was correct. Abit had owed the Kapiciobul brothers 100 lira.

Ismail’s Attachment to his Past Life Identity of Abit Suzulmus

As a child, Ismail insisted that his family call him Abit. When he was six years old and it was time to enroll in school, he demanded that he be registered as Abit Altunkalic, a demand that his father agreed to.

When he was seven years old, at the time when Ian Stevenson first met him, Ismail still would not respond to anyone unless he was addressed as Abit. Even in adulthood, Ismail was attached to the name and when Ian Stevenson met Ismail in 1973, when he was 16 years old, he showed Stevenson his identity card, in which his first name was listed as Abit.

Ismail’s attachment to the name Abit is reminiscent of the case of Francesco Foscari | Wayne Peterson. As a young child, Wayne refused to respond to his name Wayne. When his parents asked what he wanted to be called, he declared that his name was Francesco Foscari, though he had no idea where he got that name from. As an adolescent, Wayne even considered to legally change his name to Francesco Foscari. It took several decades for Wayne to realize that in a past lifetime, he was Francesco Foscari.

Past Life Emotions: Ismail’s Love for the Family of Abit Suzulmus

Ian Stevenson noted that Ismail had an intense and enduring attachment to Abit’s family. When Ismail saw a good cut of meat in his father’s butcher shop, he asked his father to prepare it and sent it to Abit’s children. When his father refused, Ismail wept for hours and would not eat. His father finally gave in and took the meat to the Suzulmus family. Ismail also asked his father to send watermelons to Abit’s family, which his father also resisted.

In 1964, when Ismail learned of the death of Abit’s mother, he cried and went to bed without dinner. When Abit’s son, Zeki, joined the military and left Adana, Ismail was upset as he was not informed or consulted in the matter.

Once, when Ismail was visiting the Suzulmus home, Abit’s daughter, Hekmit, was holding Ismail’s hand. He then told Hekmit that she was his daughter and that the house and garden belonged
to him.

During one period of his life, Ismail demanded to live with the Suzulmus family. Though this was not allowed, Ismail visited the Suzulmus family often and greatly enjoyed their time together. This is reminiscent of the Rashid Khaddege | Daniel Jurdi case, as Daniel would visit his past life family monthly. The Khaddege family even kept a cot or small bed for Daniel, so that he could sleep over on his visits.

Past Life Behaviors & Emotions: Ismail Demonstrates Behaviors Typical of Abit and Rejoices at the Hanging of Abit’s Murderer

Ismail spontaneously developed this same habit as a small child and continued to wear the towel on his shoulder until he was nine years old. As noted before, Ismail recalled how he, as Abit, enjoyed drinking raki with his friends. As a child, Ismail was discovered to secretly drink raki.

When, after a long series of legal delays, Ramazan, the murderer of Abit was finally hanged, Ismail’s parents observed that he was very pleased and clapped his hands in joy.

Past Life Love & Emotions: Abit and Sehide are Reunited through Reincarnation

Recall that Sehide was Abit’s wife, who was murdered at the same time that Abit was killed. A young woman named Cevriye Bayri came forward and claimed to have memories of being Sehide.

Ian Stevenson pointed out that the Abit Suzulmus | Ismail Altunkalic case is one of the best documented of all Turkish reincarnation cases. This reincarnation case demonstrates the following features:

Soul Plan & Spirit Being Involvement: In an announcing dream, a neighbor of the Altunkalic family had a dream that was interpreted to mean that Abit Suzulmus would be reincarnated as the son of Nebihe Altunakalic, which appears to have indeed occurred. As such, it appears that the soul of Abit was able to communicate that he would be reborn nearby.

Geographic Past Life Memory: Ismail was able to lead his father directly to the home of Abit Suzulmus, where Abit and his wife, Sehide, were murdered. Ismail was only three years of age at the time that he showed the way to Abit’s home and he had not been shown the way before.

Family Relationships Renewed through Reincarnation: Sehide was Abit’s pregnant wife, who was murdered at the same time that Abit was. A young woman named Cevriye Bayri reported having memories of being Sehide. When Ismail and Cevriye first met, they embraced each other and Ismail expressed his desire to marry Cevriye. Another village in the area is Karaali, which lies 8 kilometers south of Bedirge. All these locations are part of the southernmost Turkish province of Hatay.

Abdulkerim was a farmer and his land was along a highway. Abdulkerim married a woman named Surevya, who was from Arsus, with whom he had three children. She was pregnant again at the time that Abdulkerim died.

Abdulkerim was a Muslim who observed the month long fast of Ramadan, which also requires abstinence from alcohol. Ramadan is followed by the three day holiday of Seker Bayram, which some Muslims celebrate with indulgence in alcohol. On February 26, 1963, Abdulkerim celebrated Seker Bayram in Antakya with friends by drinking raki, an alcoholic beverage made in Turkey.

After Ramadam, Abdulkerim Drinks Raki

The group, consisting of Abdulkerim, Suphi Elmas, Huseyin Yenoicak and Abdulgani Kizildag, got into a Fiat minibus with Cevri at the wheel. Two of the drinking companions, Hasan Bereket and Remzi Simsek stayed behind.

Abdulgani Kizildag asked to be taken back to the gasoline station where he worked. After they dropped him off, the group headed towards Bedirge. Just as the minivan approached the bridge at Karaali, a truck came from the other direction with its high beam lights on. The lights blinded Cevri who went off the edge of the road, striking the wall of the bridge. The minibus spun around and stopped on the embankment below the bridge.

Abdulkerim was sitting next to the driver. With the impact of the crash, he was smashed against the frame of the vehicle, the force causing one of his shoes to fly off. Abdulkerim was killed instantly. As noted the date was February 26, 1963. The driver, Cervi, suffered a concussion, was hospitalized for three days and was then transferred to prison. He later went to trial for reckless driving and driving while intoxicated, but was acquitted.

Past Life Memories: Necati Caylak Remembers his Past Life and Death as Abdulkerim Hadduroglu

Necati Caylak as born in 1963 in the village of Karaali, about a month after Abdulkerim died in the crash. His parents were Mikdat Caylak and his wife, Zekiye.

When he was two or three years old, Necati started talking about a past lifetime. His first statement referred to his having owned a field near a highway. He said that he was from Bedirge in his prior incarnation.

Necati then said that he had been killed at the Karaali bridge when the vehicle he was in hit the bridge as he was returning from Antakya to Bedirge. He said that he had been drinking before the accident and that it occurred on a Muslim religious holiday. Necati accurately stated the vehicle he was in was a minibus and that he lost a shoe in the crash.

Past Life Memories: Necati Identifies Past Life Companions in the Minibus

IISIS4PastLifeRegressionTherapyTurkeyvancrashNecati correctly named Cevri and Abdulgani as being in the minibus with him, and that Abdulgani worked in a gas station. He said that the minivan was stolen, which was partially correct, as the minivan was taken without permission of the owners.

Necati identified Remzi as being another friend in the minibus. In actuality, Remzi was part of the group that drank raki on the night of the accident, but Remzi was left behind and did not travel in the minivan. Necati states that Ferrac was another occupant of the minvan, but in reality Ferrac was a part owner of the minivan who was not involved in the accident. Necati did not accurately identify Suphi Elmas and Huseyin Yenoicak as the other occupants of the minivan.

In sum, Necati gave an accurate description of the crash, in that he said it happened in a minivan at the bridge at Karaali and that he lost a shoe in the accident. He also made a number of accurate statements involving occupants of the minibus, namely that he, Cevri and Abdulgani traveled in the minibus before the crash, but he also confused a few names and details regarding the occupants.

Necati’s family had heard about the crash at the Karaali bridge, which only happened a month before Necati was born, but they didn’t know any details regarding those involved in the accident. As such, they could not have supplied Necati will all these details involving the occupants of the minivan.

Past Life Phobia: Necati’s Fear of Crossing the Bridge where Abdulkerim was Killed

IISIS4PastLifeRegressionTherapyTurkeyBridge1When Necati was two to three years old, he and his older brother were walking down the highway when they came to the bridge at Karaali, where Abdulkerim was killed. When Necati saw the bridge, he became extremely anxious and he started to cry.

When asked why he was crying, Necati told his brother that he had been killed in a car accident there. He said that in the crash, he lost one of his shoes. Necati refused to cross the bridge and wanted to find a different way to cross the small river beneath the bridge.

Ian Stevenson noted that Necati’s phobia of the bridge lasted many years, only weakening when he reached ten years of age. Necati also had a phobia of traveling in automobiles, which persisted until he was seven years old.

A similar reaction of experiencing fear at a geographic location was also observed in the case of Rashid Khaddege | Daniel Jurdi, which was also researched by Ian Stevenson, MD. Rashid had died in an automobile crash at a spot called Military Beach, in Lebanon.

As a small child, Daniel was in a car that was being driven by his mother. As they came to the place on the road called Military Beach, little Daniel started to cry uncontrollably. When his mother asked why he was crying, Daniel said that he had been killed at this spot in his prior lifetime. Like Necati, Daniel also had a phobia of cars, though Stevenson said Daniel’s phobia was limited to fast moving vehicles.

The Rashide Khaddege | Daniel Jurdi case is especially important, as it demonstrates that facial features can remain the same from one incarnation to another.

Past Life Memories: Necati Identifies Past Life Family Members

Following his reaction to the bridge a Karaali, Necati gave additional details about his past lifetime. He said that his name had been Abdulkerim. Necati said that his wife was named Sureyya, who came from Arsus. He said that he had sons named Mehmet and Ali, as well as a daughter named Enver, which may have been his attempt to say Munnever. Later on, when he met Abdulkerim’s widow, he correctly told her that their daughter’s name was Munnever.

Necati also said that in his past lifetime his mother was named Fatma, his sister was named Katif and that he had an aunt named Meryem. All these statements were correct.

He said that he had been drinking alcohol at the time of the crash. Necati initially mistakenly said that he had been driving the vehicle that crashed. Later on, he said that Cevri was the one driving the car. Necati added that Cevri should not have been driving, as he had been drinking.

Spirit Being: Abdulkerim Hadduroglu Observes Events after his Death

Sureyya was pregnant at the time that Abdulkerim died and she did give birth to another child after his death. Necati’s knowledge that Sureyya delivered a child after his death implies that the soul of Abdulkerim was able to observe his loved ones from the spirit world. This phenomenon has been observed in many reincarnation cases, which are complied in the section entitled Spirit Being Involvement in Reincarnation Cases.

Past Life Relationships: Necati is Reunited with his Past Life Wife and Family

Sureyya Hadduroglu, the widow of Abdulkerim, heard about Necati’s claim to have died in an auto accident at the Karaali bridge. In the autumn of 1966, three and a half years after the accident, when Necati was about three and a half years old, Sureyya came to visit Necati. She brought with her Abdulkerim’s great uncle, Hasan Sufi Hadduroglu, and two of Abdulkerim’s friends, the brothers Zeyneb and Ahmet Adahi.

Necati replied, “Sureyya.” (2)

Sureyya then had little Necati sit on her knee. She then asked, “Who am I?” (3)

Necati then stated, “You are my wife.” Necati then added that Sureyya was the daughter of his past life uncle, which was correct. (4)

When asked who Hasan Sufi Hadduroglu was, Necati correctly responded that he was a past life paternal uncle. Necati also correctly identified by name Zeyneb and Ahmet Adahi.

Necati’s spontaneous identifications made Sureyya believe that Necati was indeed the reincarnation of her deceased husband, Abdulkerim. Necati’s correct identification of Abdulkerim’s family members brought Sureyya to tears.

Sureyya then said to Necati, referring to him as her husband reborn: “How could you leave Sureyya?” (5)

Necati replied, “But you are Sureyya.” (6)

Past Life Memories: Necati Identifies Past Life Family Members at the home of his Past Life Wife, Sureyya

Sureyya invited Necati and his father to her home to visit her and her children. There, Sureyya’s father-in-law, that is, Abdulkerim Hadduroglu’s father, took Necati in his arms and showed him photographs on the wall and asked, “Who is this?” (7)

Necati looked at the photos and correctly identified himself in his past incarnation, Abdulkerim Hadduroglu, and Abdulkerim’s sister, Katif.

At Sureyya’s home, Necati also spontaneiously identified Meryem Haddurouglu, Abdulkerim’s stepmother. While he was at Surreyya’s home, Mehmet, Abdulkerim’s eldest son, entered the house. When Necati saw him, he immediately and spontaneously said, “This young man is my son.” (8)

Past Life Behavior: Little Necati likes Raki and Identifies his Past Life Drinking Companions in Karaali

Unannounced, he and two others who had been drinking with Abdulkerim on the day he died decided to visit Necati. This occurred in 1968, when Necati was five years old. As they arrived in Karaali, Necati saw them.

Necati spontaneously said to Hasan: “Oh, how are you, Hasan?” (9)

Hasan reported that Necati also recognized the two other drinking companions.

Of interest, Necati also demonstrated a premature interest in raki.

Principles of Reincarnation & Understanding Past Lives

Phobia from a Past Lifetime: Necati demonstrated a great fear of crossing the bridge at Karaali, where Abdulkerim Hadduroglu was killed. This phobia lasted until he was ten years old. In addition, Necati had a fear of traveling in automobiles, which lasted until he was seven.

Spirit Being Involvement: Necati’s knowledge that Sureyya, his past life wife, delivered a child after his death implies that the soul of Abdulkerim was able to observe his loved ones from the spirit would. He was apparently able to observe that his wife’s pregnancy ended in the delivery of a healthy child.

Relationships Renewed through Reincarnation: Necati was reunted with this past life family and wife.

Split Incarnation: Necati was born about a month after Abdulkerim had died. If it is assumed that he soul is involved in the development of the fetus, then Abdulkerim’s soul was animating Necati’s fetus for 8 months of gestation. This phenomenon of a soul being able to inhabit more than one human bodies at a time is termed split incarnation.

Ahmet Delibalta’s Nightclub, Bakery & Muslim Wife

iisis4pastliferegressiontherapyturkeycrashAhmet Delibalta was born in Adana, Turkey, in 1936. He married a woman named Mihriban and had three children with her. Ahmet also took a second wife, Fehime, a Turk who was an orthodox Muslim.

Ahmet owned a nightclub in Adana called “Havuz” and running this club was his passion. Havuz provided Ahmet with a very good income and he was able to afford a large and well-appointed house. Ahmet also owned a bakery in Adana.

Ahmet Freezes to Death after a Plane Crash

In 1962 he went to Istanbul to find a female singer for his nightclub. His second wife, Fehime, was pregnant when he left for this two week business trip. In Istanbul, Ahmet chose a woman named Rengin Arda as his singer. On March 8, 1962, he was bringing Rengin back to Adana by airplane. IISIS4PastLifeRegressionTherapyTurkeyMountain1Unfortunately, the Turkish Airlines airplane they were on crashed in the snow-covered Toros Mountains. It was thought the passengers died on impact.

The investigation that followed, though, revealed that the plane had landed in soft snow, but in a very remote area, which meant that rescuers could not reach the downed plane for several days. Passengers who survived the crash, including Ahmet, froze to death. Ahmet was about 35 years old when he died.

In Error, A Jewish Man’s Body is Received by Ahmet’s Family

In recovering bodies from the crash, a mistake was made in identifying Ahmet’s body. Initially, the body of another passenger, who was Jewish, was identified as Ahmet. This occurred when Ahmet’s younger brother declined to view the body itself, as it was too emotionally distressing for him. Instead, he asked to be shown clothing from the body. Mistakenly, he identified the clothing from the Jewish man as the clothing that belonged to Ahmet. The body of the Jewish man was then buried in a cemetery under the name of Ahmet Delibalta.

The error was subsequently discovered when the rest of the bodies were brought down from the mountain. One of the bodies had the Ahmet’s identify card on it. The body of the Jewish man who was mistakenly buried as Ahmet had to be exhumed and buried elsewhere.

Soul Plan: An Announcing Dream

Latife Kilic lived in Adana, Turkey, with her husband Yusuf. A week before Ahmet Delibalta’s plane crashed, she had a dream. In this dream, Ahmet Delibalta appeared, who Latife only knew by sight, not by acquaintance. In the dream, Ahmet gave her a gift and then laid down on the bed between Latife and Yusef. When she woke, Latife asked her husband:

“What does that nightclub man want at our place?” (1)

Latife was pregnant and near term. Yusuf interpreted the dream to mean that they would have a boy. Approximately two weeks later, Latife did have a boy, which we will see appears to have indeed been the reincarnation of Ahmet Delibalta.

Past Life Phobia: Erkan Kilic is Born with an Intense Fear of Airplanes

Turboprop airplaneErkan Kilic was born in Adana, Turky, around the day of March 13, 1962, just a few days after the airplane crash that killed Ahmet Delibalta. As noted, his parents were Yusuf Kilic and his wife, Latife, who were Arabs. Erkan was one of 15 children born to Latife and Yusuf. Yusuf worked for his nephew, Zekeriya Kilic, who owned a business selling electrical equipment. Yusef and Latife were relatively poor.

Before Erkan could even speak, he demonstrated a great fear of airplanes, which was triggered by seeing an airplane or by hearing their engines. Upon these occasions, Erkan would run to his mother or hide under his bed. This phobia lasted until he was three years of age.

Phobias from past life traumas are common in reincarnation cases. In the case of Rashid Khaddege | Daniel Jurdi, Daniel had a phobia of fast moving cars, which resulted from his death as Rashid Kaddege in an automobile accident. In the case of Anne Frank | Barbro Karlen, Barbro had a fear of men in uniform, stemming from Anne Frank’s persecution by Nazi’s. Both the Kaddege | Jurdi and Frank | Karlen cases show that facial features can remain the same from lifetime to lifetime. The Anne Frank | Barbro Karlen case demonstrates that one can change religion and nationality from one incarnation to another.

Past Life Memories: Erkan Tells Latife that He is Ahmet Delibalta & She is Not his Real Mother

Erkan began to talk when he was between two and three years of age,. As soon as he could speak, he told Latife that she was not his mother. He asked to be taken to his real mother and to his wife. Erkan also said that his real name was Ahmet Delibalta and that he had a nightclub called “Havuz,” as well as a bakery. As noted, Erkan’s parents knew who Ahmet Delibalta was and of his death in a plane crash, but they denied having any personal acquaintance with Ahmet.

The phenomenon of a child telling the biologic mother that she is not the child’s real mother, along with the demand by the child to be taken to their real mother, is common in reincarnation cases studied by Ian Stevenson. As another example, in the case of Anne Frank | Barbro Karlen, little Barbro also told her parents that they were not her real parents and that their home was not her real home. Barbro informed her biologic parents that her real parents would soon come to get her and take her back to her real home.

Past Life Memories: Erkan Describes his Death as Ahmet Delibalta

IISIS4PastLifeRegressionTherapyTurkeyFreezeWhen Erkan was two to three years old, he reported details of his death in a past lifetime. He told his mother, Latife, that he had gone to Istanbul to find a singer for his nightclub. On the way back from Istanbul, their plane crashed in the Toros mountains.

Little Erkan also knew that he, as Ahmet, did not die in the crash of the plane. Rather, Erkan said that he died later by freezing to death. Ian Stevenson was particularly impressed by this statement made by Erkan, as everyone associated with this reincarnation case thought that all the victims had died on impact. Only those very familiar with the investigation of the crash knew that some passengers, including Ahmet Delibalta, did survive the crash and later froze to death.

Spirit Being in Reincarnation Case: Ahmet, from the Spirit World, Observes Recovery of his Body

Erkan also knew that his body was confused with that of a Jewish man who was also on the plane. Ahmet’s brothers reported that the Delibalta family was very embarrassed about this incident and tried to keep it secret. As such, the confusion regarding the bodies was not well-known outside the immediate family. As such, how could Erkan, as a child, know this detail?

Erkan’s knowledge of the confusion about the identity of the bodies also implies that after his death, Ahmet was able to observe the recovery of bodies and the chain of events that led to the wrong body being buried in Ahmet’s grave. As such, this represents an example of spirit being involvement in a reincarnation case.

Past Life Memories: Erkan Identifies Past Life Family Members

When Erkan was two to three years old, he made accurate statements regarding the names of his past life family. He said that in his lifetime as Ahmet, his father was named Yunus, his mother Emine, his sons Veysel and Ali, his daughter Aysel, his sister Turkan and his mother-in-law Katibe. All these statements were correct.

Erkan also reported that his wife’s name was Mihriban and that he had another wife named Fehime. Erkan said the he preferred Mihriban over Fehime, which was verified by Ahmet’s brother-in-law.

Erkan was also able to identify members of Ahmet Delibalta’s family from photographs. He correctly identified Ahmet’s wife, Mihriban, and two of Ahmet’s children, Veysel and Aysel, in these photos. It is not clear whether Erkan had already met Mihriban when he saw these pictures, but Ian Stevenson found the identification of Veysel and Aysel, as small children, as impressive.

Geographic Past Life Memory: Erkan Finds his Way to his to Wife, Mihriban, and his Past Life Home

IISIS4PastLifeRegressionTherapyTurkeyHouseWhen Erkan was two to three years old, he expressed a desire to visit places from his past lifetime as Ahmet. On his own, he walked to the home of Ahmet Delibalta, which was 200 meters away from the Kilic home. Ahmet’s widow, Mihriban, was still living there. There, Erkan introduced himself to Mihriban.

Later on, when Latife was with Mihriban and Mihriban’s sister-in-law, Latife asked who his wife in his past lifetime was. Without any hesitation, Erkan correctly pointed to Mihriban.

On another occasion, Erkan had completely disappeared from the Kilic home, which caused a panic. His parents later found him in the Ahmet Delibalta’s home, with Ahmet’s first wife, Mihriban.

After Erkan found the Delibalta home, he went there on his own often and would stay sometimes until 10 or 11 at night. A Kilic family member had to go to retrieve him. Latife, Erkan’s mother, found Erkan’s frequent visits to the Delibalta’s home so annoying that she started to beat him to prevent him from going there.

When Mihriban would take her children to visit her sister, who lived in a house across the street from the Kilic family, Erkan would climb on the roof and watch them. When asked what he was doing, Erkan explained that he was “watching his wife and children.” Ian Stevenson noted that Erkan repeatedly was observed to climb on the roof to watch Mihriban and her children. Geographic Past Life Memory: Erkan Finds the Apartment of Fehime, his Past Life Second Wife

Latife knew that Fehime lived in the same apartment building as her physician, so she took Erkan there and went to the physician’s door, hoping he could direct them to where Fehime lived. The physician was not home.

Erkan then led Latife to another door in the apartment building and knocked on it. Fehime answered. Latife then introduced herself. Fehime had heard about Erkan’s claims to be the reincarnation of Ahmet.

Fehime then asked Erkan, “Do you recognize me?” (3)

Erkan replied: “You are Fehime.” (4)

Fehime then asked, “What relation am I to you?” (5)

Erkan replied: “You are my wife.” (6)

Fehime then introduced Erkan to a small girl who was in the apartment. She asked Erkan if he knew who she was.

Erkan replied: “How could I recognize her since you were pregnant and suffering labor pains?” (7)

Ahmet, as a Spirit Being, Observes Fehime in Labor

Fehime had delivered her daughter two days after Ahmet’s plane crashed in the Toros Mountains. Ahmet, did not die in the crash, though it is not known how long he lived after the crash. Whether he was dead or alive, it appears that his soul was able to observe Fehime going into labor.

Geographic Past Life Memory: Erkan Finds his Past Life Mother & Bakery

“I can show you the way to my mother’s place.” (8)

Latife allowed him to try to find the way and she followed him to see where he would go. Erkan led his mother on a 200 meter walk directly to the home of Ahmet’s mother, which was next door to the bakery that Ahmet had owned.

Once Erkan found the bakery, he would repeatedly visit it and claim that he owned the bakery. One baker came to believe that Erkan was indeed the reincarnation of Ahmet Delibalta and gave him a loaf of bread. The worker invited Erkan to return whenever he wanted more bread.

Geographic Past Life Memory in Reincarnation Cases

Many reincarnation cases feature the phenomenon of a child remembering the way to a past life home. As an example, in the case of Anne Frank | Barbro Karlen, at ten years of age Barbro was able to lead her parents on a 10 minute walk from their hotel in Amsterdam directly to the Anne Frank House, even though Barbro had never been in Amsterdam before.

Past Life Memory: Erkan Recognizes the Singer from Istanbul from a Photograph

IISIS4PastLifeRegressionTherapyTurkeySingerRengin Arda, the singer who died with Ahmet on the way back from Istanbul, had been in Adana once before. A German hairdressing she went to had a photograph taken with Regin on this prior visit. When the hairdresser heard about Erkan’s claim that he was Ahmet reincarnated, the hairdresser came to the Kulic home to do her own test.

The hairdresser had everyone sit down and be silent. She then brought out her photograph and showed it to Erkan. She then asked who the women in photo were.

Erkan replied: “You and the singer.” (9)

The hairdresser then asked Erkan the name of the singer. He replied promptly: “Rengin Arda.” (10)

Ian Stevenson noted that this was a significant identification, as Erkan’s parents themselves did not know the name of the singer.

Past Life Behavior: Erkan plays Nightclub Owner, a Past Life Passion

“Erkan greatly enjoyed playing that he was the proprietor of a nightclub. He arranged boxes to represent a bar and put bottles on them. He assigned roles to the neighborhood girls and gave one a stick to hold to represent a microphone held by the singer. On one occasion, Erkan was observed setting out two chairs for the wives of Ahmet, Mihriban and Fehime.” (11)

“Latife Kilic had the impression from watching Erkan playing the game of ‘nightclub’ that he preferred Mihriban to Fehime. Erkan himself said quite frankly in 1970 that he (in his previous life) preferred Mihriban to Fehime.” (12)

As noted previously, Latife’s observation and Erkan’s statement that Ahmet preferred Mihriban was confirmed by Ahmet’s brother in law, Ihsan Ozbicer.

Erkan’s early fascination with playing nightclub can be seen as a talent or passion that stems from a past incarnation. Many other reincarnation cases involve children and adults who demonstrate talents or interests from past incarnations.

Past Life Memory: Erkan Identifies his Watch from his Past Lifetime

When Erkan was fours year old, he said that as Ahmet, he and a friend named Mithat exchanged watches and that Mithat still had his watch. He also said that the watch had teeth marks on it.

Ahmet Delibalta did have a friend named Mithat Goksal, who was contacted regarding Erkan’s claim. Mithat confirmed that he and Ahmet had exchanged watches in Mithat’s office. Mithat thought it was extremely unlikely that anyone other than he and Ahmet could have known about this exchange. Ian Stevenson examined the watch and found that there were indeed teeth marks on the watch case, which, it was learned, had been made by Ahmet’s children.

Past Life Memory: Erkan Recalls Stealing a Tray

Erkan said that as Ahmet, he once stole a tray from his parent’s home. Erkan said that he stole the tray to get money to go to a football game and that he sold the tray for 25 kurus.

This incident was later confirmed by Ahmet’s friend, Selim Ozel, who was an accomplice to the theft. Selim and Ahmet indeed wanted to go to a football game, but Ahmet did not have enough money for a ticket. He stole the tray and sold it for 25 kurus to get into the football game. This occurred when Ahmet was 15 years old, 20 years before his death.

When Selim Ozel met Erkan, as a test he asked if anyone else went with them to the football game. Erkan said there was a third boy named Tevfic who went with them, which Selim verified as correct.

Ian Stevenson pointed out that only three people knew of this incident, Ahmet, Selim and Tevfic. Similarly, the exchange of watches was only known by Ahmet and Mithat. By reporting details from Ahmet’s life that are so obscure, it is hard to imagine how Erkan could have known this information except through reincarnation and past life memories.

Relationships Renewed through Reincarnation: As a Child, Erkan Plays with his Own Past Life Son

Erkan became friends with one of the sons of Ahmet Delibalta, whose name was Ali. Erkan and Ali would make so much noise in their play that Latife, Erkan’s mother, would try to send Ali away. Erkan would than stop her, stating that Ali was “my son.” (13)

Latife then gave in and let them play. A neighbor noted that Erkan would embrace Ali more like a parent than a playmate.

Principles of Reincarnation & Understanding Past Lives

Geographic Past Life Memory: Between the ages of two and three, Erkat was able to find his way to his past life home, where he and his past life wife, Mihriban, lived. In addition, he was able to find the apartment where his other past life wife, Fehime, lived. Erkat was also able, on his own, to find the house where his past life mother lived.

Geographic memory was also dramatically demonstrated in the Anne Frank | Barbro Karlen reincarnation case, as Barbro at the age of ten was able to find Anne Frank House, without directions, on her first trip to Amsterdam.

Another case involving geographic memory involves neurosurgeon Norm Shealy, MD, PhD, who intuitively was led to the location where he practiced medicine in nineteenth century England, in his past lifetime as John Elliotson.

Renewal of Relationships through Reincarnation: Ahmet Delibalta reincarnated as Erkan Kulic in the same section of Adana that he had lived in his previous life. As such, this gave Ahmet easy access to his past life family.

Erkan enjoyed the company of his past life family so much that his mother tried to prevent him from going to Mihriban’s house. In an especially poignant feature of this story, Erkan became friends with his own past life son, Ali. Erkan and Ali played together joyfully.

Please note that reincarnating in a way that allows reunion with past life family members involves planning by the soul.

Past Life Phobia: Erkan had a great fear of airplanes. When he saw or heard a plane, he would run to his mother or dive under his bed for safety. In his past lifetime, Erkan had died following a plane crash.

Spirit Beings in Reincarnation Case: This reincarnation case demonstrates the involvement of spirit beings in several ways. Ahmet appears to have been able to observe the airplane crash scene after his death, as Erkan knew about how his body was confused with the body of a Jewish man, who was mistakenly buried in Ahmet’s grave.

Erkan also made the statement that his wife, Fehime, was in labor during the crash. Fehime gave birth two days after Ahmet’s plane went down. As Ahmet did not die in the crash, but froze after the plane landed in soft snow, it seems quite possible that Ahmet died while Fehime was in labor.

Another example of spirit beings involves the announcing dream that Latife, Erkan’s mother, had. In this dream, Ahmet Delibalta appeared, gave her a gift and then laid down between her and her husband. It appears that from the spirit world, the soul of Ahmet was communicating to Latife that he would be born to her. Two weeks later, Ahmet indeed appears to have been born to her as Erkan.

Split Incarnation or Parallel Lives: Erkan Kilic was born only a few days after Ahmet Delibalta died. If the assumption is made that the soul is involved in the development of the fetus, which will be discussed in the section on Soul Evolution, then the soul of Ahmet was involved with the fetus of Erkan for the entire nine months of gestation, while Ahmet was still alive.

This same phenomenon was also observed in the very important case of Hanan Monsour | Suzanne Ghanem, as Susan was born only ten days after Hanan had died following heart surgery. The Monsour | Ghanem case also shows that facial features can remain the same from one lifetime to another.

The phenomenon of a soul inhabiting more than one body at a time has been termed split incarnation. One wonders whether in cases such as Hanan Monsour and Ahmet Delibalta, the soul knows of a predestined fatal event and begins another incarnation in anticipation of letting go of the other.

This case involving Uttara Huddar is especially fascinating, as the past life personality, whose name is Sharada, would spontaneously take over Uttara’s body and would remain for varying periods of time. In most reincarnation cases, the contemporary individual views the past incarnation as a distant memory and retains control of consciousness.

In contrast, in this case, Sharada, the past life persona, would completely take over the consciousness of Uttara’s body to the extent that Uttara had no memory of what occurred while Sharada was manifesting. Sharada’s appearances occurred over a period of at least nine years.

As such, the Sharada | Huddar case demonstrates an interesting property of the soul, which is that the soul retains past life personalities within it. This is discussed further in the section entitled Soul Evolution.

This case also shows that nationality and ethic affiliation can change from one lifetime to another. An amusing aspect is that the past life personality, Sharada, showed prejudice and disdain towards the ethnic group that the contemporary personality, Uttara, belonged to. This shows that it does not make sense to establish one’s identity too strongly on national or ethnic ties, as these can change from one incarnation to another.

History of Bengal in Relation to India

Sharada stated that she lived in Bengal, which is over 1200 kilometers or 750 miles from Nagpur. In the map provided to the right, Bengal would be located in the area highlighted in yellow and in the area where Bangladesh is now situated.

The history of this region of the world is complicated. Bengal is a region located between India and Myanmar, which formerly was called Burma. In 1947, when India gained independence, Bengal was split into two countries along religious lines. The western section became part of India, which came to be called West Bengal. Kolkata, previously known as Calcutta, is the principle city of West Bengal. The eastern part of Bengal eventually became the nation of Bangladesh. West Bengal and Bangladesh still share the common Bengali language.

In India, several different languages are spoken. The major Indian languages are Hindi, Bengali and Marathi. Though the three languages derive from a common ancient root language, in contemporary times, they are as different as are Spanish and Italian. Bengali speakers do not understand Hindi or Marathi, nor do Marathi speakers understand Bengali or Hindi.

Xenoglossy in Reincarnation Case of Sharada | Uttara Huddar

Uttara, the contemporary personality, could only speak Marathi, the language of her parents, while Sharada, the past life personality, could only speak Bengali, a language that Uttara and her family members did not understand. As such, this case represents an extraordinary case of xenoglossy.

Xenoglossy is the ability to speak a language without learning the language by normal means. Sharada never learned Bengali, nor did she understand it in her normal conscious state. Yet when Sharada took over Uttara’s body, she could speak Bengali fluently.

Uttara, the contemporary personality, had no knowledge of these family members from a past incarnation.

More amazing is that Sharada, the past life personality, was not aware that she was dead. Rather, she acted as if she was still alive, transported though time from the ninetieth century to the present. Sharada did state that she was bitten on a toe of her right foot by a cobra, which was the last incident that she described in her lifetime, but she did not seem to realize that she had died from the snake bite.

Sharada had no understanding of modern inventions, such as kitchen appliances, tape recorders and motor cars, which should have made her realize that she was appearing in a different era. Still, Sharada maintained that she and her Bengali family were still alive and well.

Uttara Huddar and her Family

IISISReincarnationResearchGaneshLet us get to know the characters in this interesting story. Uttara, the subject of the case, is the daughter of GM and Manoram Huddar. As mentioned, the family lived in Nagpur, a city of one million people, where the main languages spoken are Hindi and Marathi, though 10,000 Bengalis also live in the area. GM Huddar’s family had lived in the Nagpur area for generations.

GM Huddar fought for Indian independence and he graduated from Nagpur University, later becoming a landowner and farmer. Mr. Huddar spoke Marathi. He did not know Bengali. Manorama, his wife, spoke Marathi and Hindi, but she spoke no Bengali. Family members never went to Bengal and they had no Bengali neighbors. The Huddar family worshiped the Hindu deity Ganesh, the being with the elephant head, who is pictured to the right.

Spirit Being Involvement in Reincarnation Cases

When Manorama was pregnant with Uttara, she would often dream that a cobra was about to bite her right big toe. Manorama would kick off the snake and then wake up. It was as if Manorama was experiencing the persona of Sharada, Uttara’s past lifetime, in these dreams. Sharada, it seems, was trying to communicate to Manorama, Uttara’s mother, that Sharada would be born to her.

This is reminiscent of the dream in the Hanan Monsour | Suzanne Ghanem reincarnation case, also researched by Ian Stevenson, MD. In that case, Suzanne Ghanem’s mother told Ian Stevenson about a dream that she had, which occurred shortly before Suzanne was born. In the dream, Ms. Ghanem saw that she would have a baby girl. Then she saw a woman who appeared to be about forty years old, who she later realized looked like Suzanne. This woman in the dream said, “I am going to come to you.” In other words, Suzanne appeared to be announcing herself in the dream, just as Sharada seemed to announcing herself to her future mother though the dream with a cobra biting her right foot.

Ian Stevenson, in fact, called these dreams in which a soul seems to be signaling its upcoming incarnation to future relatives as “announcing dreams.” Stevenson was told of announcing dreams by the relatives of subjects in many reincarnation cases.

The Monsour | Ghanem reincarnation case, by the way, is also important in that it shows that facial features can remain the same from one lifetime to another.

Reflections of a Past Lifetime in a Phobia, as well as in Dreams and Literature

Uttara was born on March 14, 1941. Uttara had a normal childhood, though she did have a phobia of snakes. The snake phobia was severe from ages to six to eight, as judged by her father.

For example, in the Rashid Khaddege | Daniel Jurdi case, Daniel had a phobia of fast moving cars. In his past lifetime as Rashid, he died when a speeding convertible car he was in flipped over. The Khaddege | Jurdi case is another reincarnation case which demonstrates that facial features can remain the same from one lifetime to another.

Uttara had a recurrent dream up until the age of eight, in which she saw her husband coming to her riding on a pony. When he arrived, he caressed her pleasantly. These dreams, we shall see, reflect the lifetime of the past life personality, Sharada.

As a child, Uttara had a special interest in Bengal and Bengalis, and she read translations of Bengali literature. This interest appears to have been related to her past lifetime as Sharada, who lived in Bengal. Note that Uttara read Marathi translations of Bengali literature; she did not learn the Bengali language.

Uttara, as a young adult, went to Nagpur University where she received a master’s degree in English and master’s in Public Administration. She was hired as a part-time Lecturer in the Department of Public Administration at Nagpur University. Her education and work history indicate that Uttara is an intelligent and grounded woman.

Sharada, A Past Life Personality, Emerges

IISISReincarnationResearchBengaliVeilIn 1973, when Uttara was 32 years old, she was admitted to a hospital in Nagpur for asthma and a gynecological problem. She was under the care of Dr. J. R. Joshi, who was Bengali. In the hospital, a yogi came to give lectures and instruction on meditation. Uttara began to practice meditation in the hospital.

Uttara’s behavior then started to change and she began speaking a different language, which was determined to be Bengali. She also began to dress differently, wearing a sari in the Bengali style, placing a portion of the sari over her head, creating a veil. Maratha women, such as Uttara, did not wear saris in this way. Uttara would leave the hospital, stating that she “wanted to go to a place where she thought she belonged.” (1)

Her parents were completely baffled at this turn of events, as they had no connection to Bengal. They puzzled at how their daughter could all of a sudden speak Bengali, a language that neither they, nor she previously, could speak. Further, as their daughter now only spoke Bengali, they could not communicate with her.

Sharada Describes a Past Life in West Bengal

Through Bengali interpreters, Uttara gave details of what appeared to be a past lifetime. She stated that her name was Sharada, not Uttara. She said that her father’s name was Brajnath Chattopadhay and that he was a priest at the Kankalini Temple near Bardhaman, also called Burdwan, in West Bengal. The existence of this little known temple was later verified.

Sharada said that her mother’s name was Renukha Devi. She said her mother died when she was 2 years of age. Her father then was remarried to a woman named Anandamoyi. Sharada said that a maternal aunt named Jagadhatri Mukhopadhaya, who lived in Saptagram, raised Sharada after her mother’s death. As such, Sharada spent most of her childhood in Saptagram, in what is now West Bengal.

IISISReincarnationResearchPregnantSharada said that when she was seven years old, she was wed in an arranged marriage to Vishwanath Mukhopadhaya, who was an Ayurvedic physician in the town of Shivapur. Her husband moved from village to village on a pony to see his patients. Later, when Bengali interviewers again asked Sharada what her husband’s name was, as a gesture of respect typical of Bengali women, she would not speak her husband’s name, rather, she wrote it in Bengali. Sharada could write, as well as speak, in Bengali, while Uttara could not.

Of interest, when Sharada first manifested in the hospital while Uttara was under the care of Dr. Joshi, Sharada acted towards him as a wife would, which made Dr. Joshi uncomfortable. She seemed quite attracted to him. When Uttara found Dr. Joshi dining with a female employee of the hospital, she turned into Sharada and scolded Dr. Joshi in a fit of jealousy.

As Dr. Joshi was a Bengali physician, as was Sharada’s husband, Ian Stevenson wondered if Joshi stimulated Sharada’s appearance. As one point, Sharada stated that Dr. Joshi was her husband. It is possible that Dr. Joshi was Sharada’s husband, Vishwanath Mukhopadhaya, in a prior incarnation. This hypothesis, unfortunately, could not be verified or refuted.

Sharada said that she had two miscarriages and then became pregnant again for the third time. When she was five months pregnant, she journeyed by cart from Shivapur, where she and her husband lived, to Saptagram to visit her maternal aunt who raised her. She left a diamond nose ring and 125 rupees at home, for fear that bandits on the road would steal these valuables.

Less than two months after arriving in Saptagram, Sharada said that she was plucking flowers in the garden when a snake bit her on the right toe. This is the last event that Sharada described in her lifetime.

Multiple Researchers Investigate Xenoglossy Reincarnation Case of Uttara Huddar

At this point, I would like to share that the Sharada | Uttara Huddar reincarnation case was studied exhaustively by multiple experts over a period of years. A newspaper story regarding this case came out in 1975, which drew the attention of Ian Stevenson, MD, who collaborated with professors in India.

As examples, Professor P. Pal, a reincarnation investigator and a native of Bengal, as well as Dr. R. K. Sinha, also a native of Bengal, were deeply involved. Dr. S.K. Das, a professor of Bengali, also testified that Sharada was truly speaking Bengali. Tape recordings of Sharada were made and studied. Ian Stevenson worked with these various researchers and compiled their findings in his book, Unlearned Language.

Verification of Statements Made by Sharada, the Past Life Personality

In May 1975, Dr. Sinha, one of the researchers involved in the case, visited Saptaram in West Bengal and inquired about a family described by Sharada. After much effort, he found Satinath Chattopadhaya, who produced a genealogy of ancestors extending back to the nineteenth century. A beautiful and very ornate example of a geneological record or family tree is provided below.

Dr. Sinha brought the genealogy back to Nagpur and asked Sharada to name her relatives. Sharada made the following identifications accurately:

Father-Brajnath

Mother: Renukha Devi

Stepmother: Anadamori

Brothers-Kailasnath, Srianth and Satinath

Grandfather-Ramanth

Uncle Devdas, corrected as Devanth

Based on Sharada’s ability to accurately name these relatives, as confirmed by the genealogy, Ian Stevenson became convinced that Sharada was referring the Chattopadhaya family as her past life family. If this is correct, then her memories or statements were objectively validated. Unfortunately, names for her husband and father-in-law could not be verified from the genealogy, as they belonged to a different family tree.

Of note, Sharada said that a monk took one of the male family members to become initiated in the Nath order. She said that villages afterwards called the family the Nath family and that family members took on “nath” as a suffix. The genealogy did confirm that nath appears as a suffix for all male family members to this day. Again, Sharada’s statements were objectively verified.

Ian Stevenson makes the point that it was unlikely that the Huddar family could have had read the genealogy in advance of the case investigation, as it was written in Bengali, which the Huddars didn’t understand.

Xenoglossy: Sharada’s Bengali Language Skills

Whereas in some xenoglossy cases, vocabulary can be limited, Sharada could speak Bengali extensively. Professor Pal reported: “I talked with Sharada for about ten hours. Neither of us had any difficulty in understanding even a word of what the other spoke. We were talking with normal fluency.” (2)

Professor Pal also noted, “All the while she was talking fluently in Bengali like a normal Bengali girl and I did not notice any difference in intonation from that of a Bengali lady.” (3)

Dr. Roy signed a document that Sharada and he spoke for two hours exclusively in Bengali. Her answers were sensible and she demonstrated complete command of the Bengali language.

As such, Sharada demonstrated what Ian Stevenson calls responsive xenoglossy, where the subject not only can speak a language that has not been learned, but the subject can also respond to questions in that language in an interactive way. Sharada could also read and write Bengali. In contrast, as noted, Uttara could not understand Bengali at all.

Sharada’s Past Life Knowledge of Bengali Geography and Places

In addition to being able to understand, speak and write Bengali, Sharada demonstrated extensive knowledge of Bengali geography and places, even remote and relatively unknown places.

Recall that Sharada had said that her father was a priest at the Kankalini Temple at Kanchanagar and that it was six kilometers from Burdwan, a city now called Bardhaman, in West Bengal. The existence and location of this temple was verified, which was particularly impressive as the temple is not well-known. In fact, the village of Kanchanagar had been deserted, possibly after an epidemic, and had been overgrown by jungle for 50 years.

IISISReincarnationResearchHinduTempleIn another example, when an investigator showed Sharada a photo of the Bengali Hanserhwar Temple of Bamberia, Sharada identified it immediately by name. When asked how many towers the temple had, Sharada correctly stated that there were 13 towers, even though the photo only featured a portion of the temple, showing only seven towers.

She knew that Kali was the goddess of the temple, that the Kali idol had four arms, that the idol was made of neem wood that was painted blue, and that the Rajah of Banberia brought the idol from Benares. All these statements were correct.

Sharada also accurately described the geography encountered and travel time by boat from Shivapur to Shikarpur. She also correctly described geographical details encountered in a trip from Calcutta to Shivapur.

Uttara and the Huddar family had no knowledge of the Kankalini or Hanserhwar Temples, or of geographical details regarding travel in Bengal. Further, the information was obscure and it wound not have been found in the Bengali literature that Uttara read in her youth.

Sharada’s Past Life Knowledge of Bengali Foods

IISISReincarnationResearchBengaliSweetsSharada had a remarkable knowledge of food specialties of Bengal, which she preferred over the food of Nagpur, India. While Uttara didn’t like sweets, Sharada loved Bengali sweets. When asked what her favorite sweet is, she said sitabhog, which is made only in Burdwan, Bengal. She was able to identify sitabhog when it was brought to her. Further, Sharada could distinguish sweets imported from Bengal from imitations made in Nagpur.

When Sharada fasted, she asked for coconut water. Coconuts in Bengal have water, whereas coconuts in the region where the Uddars lived do not.

Sharada preferred to eat rice and she put yogurt in her rice, which is a Bengali custom. In contrast, Sharada and her family preferred bread made from wheat, which Marathi people typically eat. Sharada reported to investigators a long list of foods that were only eaten in Bengal.

Sharada’s Ignorance of Technology

Sharada had no understanding of trains, cars, electricity, electric lights, electric fans or phones. Ian Stevenson wrote that glass bottles baffled her. In nineteenth century Bengal, food and water were kept in earthenware or metal vessels. When asked if she would like to cook Bengalis meals, she said, “How can I cook? There is neither an oven or firewood here?” Cooking on the Huddar’s gas stove was incomprehensible to her. (4)

Sharada behaved very much like a Bengali woman, in contrast to Uttara’s Marathi ways. Further, in an amusing and ironic twist, Sharada demonstrated a prejudiced and judgmental attitude towards Marathi people.

Sharada called Marathi people “dasyus,” which means “looters” in Bengali (5). She was demonstrating a typical Bengali attitude towards Marathi people, who Bengalis thought of as inferior. Sharada refused to learn the Marathi language, which she considered a harsh language.

Since she would not learn the Marathi language, Sharada could not communicate with the Huddar family. She spent much of her time alone, reading Bengali books and epics in the Bengali language, which Uttara didn’t understand.

It is amusing and ironic that Sharada was being judgmental and prejudiced towards the Marathis, who would be her own ethnic group in her future incarnation as Uttara. As noted, this case demonstrates that it is not wise to establish identity on one’s nationality or ethnic group, as these can change from one lifetime to another.

Sharada’s customs and behavior reflected her Bengali culture. As noted, Sharada wore a portion of her sari over her head, creating a veil, which is a custom of Bengali women. Uttara did not wear a sari in this way. Sharada went barefoot when she left the house, as Bengali women in the 19th century did, while Uttara wore sandals or shoes when she went out. Sharada would leave her hair loose, while Uttara pulled her hair into a bun. Sharada sat on the floor, while Uttara sat on chairs. Sharada bathed in cold water, as she would have done in the 19th century, whereas Uttara bathed in warm water.

Sharada applied vermillion or cinnabar to the part of her hair, a custom of married Bengali women. When she asked members of Uttara’s family to help her apply the cinnabar, Sharada became upset when they would apply the cinnabar from the top of her head to the forehead, which in Bengali culture means that she may suffer early widowhood. The proper Bengali way is to apply the cinnabar the opposite way, from forehead to top of head. Sharada also asked that alta, a red liquid dye, be applied to borders of her feet, another Bengali custom.

Sharada would greet older persons by touching her head to the ground, a Bengali tradition. Whereas Uttara was social and friendly, Sharada did not like to appear before strangers, unless they were Bengali. Sharada would not let Uttara’s father or brother touch her, as she did not feel related to them.

Reincarnation & Changes in Religious Worship

Sharada followed the Bengali custom of drawing an image of Durga on the floor with powder. Overall, Sharada was much more religious than Uttara, which may have reflected Sharada’s family life, as her father was a temple priest.

Transformation of Uttara into Past Life Personality Sharada

As noted, Sharada first appeared when she was in the hospital under the care of Dr. Joshi in 1973, when Uttara was 32 years old. Sharada’s appearances continued at least through October of 1982, a period of nine years.

Sharada would remain for varying amounts of time. Most of her appearances lasted 1-3 days, though some appearances lasted a week or more. The longest appearances lasted for 41 and 43 days. The frequency of appearances could vary, though for a period of time, Sharada appeared approximately twice a month.

Uttara described to investigators what the appearance of Sharada was like. Uttara said that when Sharada was approaching, she felt pain and tenderness on the top of her head. She could also have the sensation of ants crawling on top her head.

Her tongue would feel like it was being pulled inwardly and that her eyes were being pulled inside her head. She could have the sensation as if she was shrinking. She would begin weeping and then she would lose consciousness.

Sometimes the transition to Sharada would occur during sleep. Uttara would be in her normal state of being when she went to bed, then in the morning would awake as Sharada.

Whenever Sharada emerged, she would ask for flowers and sometimes she would go out to the Huddar’s garden to pick flowers. With this behavior, it appears that Sharada was reenacting the events that led to her death, just before she was bit by the cobra.

Her toe would become black, as would her tongue and the inside of her mouth. She would close her eyes and point to her toe and say, “A king cobra has bitten me.” (6) As such, it appears that Sharada was at times reliving her death in the nineteenth century.

Preservation of Past Life Personality within the Soul: Sharada Thinks She is Still Alive and Denies Knowing Uttara

Despite Sharada’s repetition of her death scene, in which she would go out to the garden to pick flowers, she had no awareness that she was dead. Though she would say that she was bitten by a cobra, was put on a stretcher and then lost consciousness, she never would state that she had died.

When she was asked if she was a spirit, Sharada replied, “I am not a spirit, I am a woman” (7)

At times when Sharada appeared, she could not speak. She would point to her throat and tears would roll down her checks. It appears that in these episodes, Sharada did not fully integrate into Uttara’s body, which made her unable to vocalize. During severe phases, she could not take care of herself and the Huddar family had to care for her, even give her water. Normally, Sharada could feed, clean and clothe herself.

On the other hand, Sharada, at times, could act quite autonomously and on three occasions she left the Uddar’s home on her own. Once she left to find Dr. Joshi, who Sharada considered her husband.

IISISReincarnationResearchEvidencePonyWhen asked how she had arrived at the Huddar’s home, she would give different explanations, as if she herself didn’t know. Once she said that her husband left her with the Huddars while he went to holy places along the Ganges River.

Sharada would ask the Huddars to take her to her husband in Shivapur or to the aunt who raised her in Saptagram. Once she wrote a letter to her husband stating: “I do not like it here. I have been here for a long time. When will you take me home?” (8)

Sharada consistently denied knowing Uttara. When asked where Uttara was, Sharada stated that she didn’t know.

Past Life Personality Sharada Shows Psychic Abilities

Sharada, in contrast to Uttara, demonstrated psychic abilities. Once she told a first time visitor to the Huddar’s home that his wife was dead, his son did not help him and that he had to beg for help from others. All these statements were correct. When a servant girl that worked for the Huddars was sent away for suspicion of stealing, Sharada said that the girl was at that very moment confessing to her grandfather and was weeping in remorse. This was later verified as true. It was as if Sharada was still connected to the soul of Sharada | Uttara, which allowed her to see in extra sensory ways.

Transformation from Past Life Personality Sharada into Uttara

Uttara said that when she emerged from the Sharada phase, she had the sensation that “something is falling down in my body.” (9) Recovery could last from 15 minutes to four hours. Uttara could have difficulty speaking Marathi after a long Sharada phase.

Uttara would have no memory of what occurred during her Sharada phase and conversely, Sharada had no awareness of anything that occurred when Uttara was herself.

For example, when Uttara’s mother, Monoram Huddar, died on July 3, 1981, Uttara was in her normal state of consciousness. When on August 8, 1981, Sharada manifested, she had no knowledge that Monoram had died. When told that Monoram had died, Sharada started to cry.

Reincarnation versus Possession

Due to the dramatic nature of Sharada’s appearances, in which Uttara had no knowledge of what occurred while Sharada inhabited her body, one must wonder if this may be a case of possession, where a disembodied spirit takes over the body of person.

In a separate section of this website, I review my working relationship with Kevin Ryerson, who is a professional medium. Kevin channels several different spirit beings, allowing these spirit beings to communicate with human beings. When Kevin channels, he has no awareness of what goes on during the channeling. When Kevin emerges from a channeling session, he has no memory of what happened during the session.

One may even think of Kevin’s ability to channel as the ability to allow temporary possession of his body in a controlled way. Kevin allows a spirit being to use his body for a period of time, though Kevin retains control and can emerge from the channeling state at will.

As such, there are similarities in the way Sharada would manifest to the channeling phenomenon that occurs with Kevin Ryerson. One difference is that Kevin retains control over the channeling experience and can return to normal consciousness if he desires. In contrast, Uttara had no control over Sharada’s appearances.

Ian Stevenson, MD, felt that the Sharada | Uttara Huddar case is more consistent with a reincarnation case, rather than possession, for several reasons. These include:

Manorama’s announcing dream: When Manorama was pregnant with Uttara, she had a recurrent dream in which a cobra was about to bite her right big toe. Manorama would kick off the snake and then wake up. It was as if Manorama was experiencing the persona of Sharada, Uttara’s past lifetime, in these dreams.

Sharada, it appears, was trying to communicate to Manorama, Uttara’s mother, that Sharada would be born to her. Announcing dreams like this are observed in reincarnation cases, not in cases of possession. An announcing dream was recounted in the reincarnation case of Hanan Monsour | Suzanne Ghanem.

Uttara’s Past Life Phobia of Snakes: Uttara had a phobia of snakes, which was particularly severe from four to eight years of age. This phobia appears to reflect a past lifetime as Sharada, who described being bit by a king cobra. Phobias related to past life trauma are observed in reincarnation cases, as observed in the Rashid Khaddege | Daniel Jurdi reincarnation case.

Principles of Reincarnation & Understanding Past Lives

If this extremely compelling case is accepted as a reincarnation case, it demonstrates the following features:

Responsive Xenoglossy and Personality Retained in the Soul: Sharada could have extensive conversations in Bengali. Professor Pal noted that in total, he conversed with Sharada in Bengali for ten hours. In contrast, Uttara, the contemporary personality, as well as her family, could not speak Bengali at all.

The Sharada personality appears to have been entirely retained within the soul. Sharada did not seem to even know that she had died. Further, Sharada denied even knowing who the contemporary personality, Uttara, was.

Phobia from a Past Lifetime: Uttara, as a child, had an intense phobia of snakes, which appears to reflect her death in a past lifetime as Sharada, by a cobra bite.

Change of Nationality, Ethnic Affiliation & Religious Belief: Sharada, the Bengali past life personality, showed contempt for the Indian Marathi people, which Uttara and her family belonged to. Sharada even referred to the Marathi as “looters.” Though both Hindu, Sharada worshiped the god Durga, while Uttara and her family were devoted to Ganesh.

Spirit Being Involvement & Announcing Dreams in Reincarnation Cases: When Manorama was pregnant with Uttara, she would dream that she was about to be bitten in her right big toe by a snake. It was as if Manorama was experiencing the persona of Sharada, Uttara’s past lifetime, in these dreams. It seems that Sharada, from the spirit world,was trying to communicate with Manorama, indicating that she would be born to her.

The Life & Suicide of Oma Devi

5 Reincarnation Suicide Case A Blazing FireOma Devi was a schoolteacher who lived in District of Farrukhabad, in the Indian state of Uddar Pradesh, which is the home of the famous Taj Mahal. Her husband was a merchant who sold books and stationary in Mohammadabad. The couple was of the Hindu faith and they had four children, two boys and two girls.

Unfortunately, Oma Devi and her husband had a bad marriage. On May 19, 1987, the couple had a serious argument and in reaction, Oma poured kerosene over herself and set herself on fire, perishing from her burns. She was 47 years of age when she died.

Oma Devi, a Hindu, Reincarnates into a Sunni Muslim Family

In October 1990, about 3 and a half years after Oma Devi died, a girl named Nagina was born to a Sunni Muslim family, who did not believe in reincarnation. The family also lived in the District of Farrukhabad, not far from Oma Devi’s home. Her father, Amaruddin, made his living by transporting people in a tanga, a horse-drawn carriage.

Nagina then made the gesture of pouring the bottle of kerosene over her head and she then made the gesture of lighting a match to set herself on fire. These gestures of lighting a match and bringing the lit match to her head became a repetitive behavior.

When Nagina was 3 years old and able to speak, she said that in a prior lifetime she was a schoolteacher named Oma and that she had 2 daughters and 2 sons. Nagina shared that after an argument with her husband, she poured kerosene over her body and then set herself on fire.

Amaruddin’s family, as noted, did not believe in reincarnation and they tried to suppress Nagina’s past life memories by beating her on the head. This strategy failed, as Nagina continued to talk about her past life.

Past Life Memories: Nagina knows Family Secrets & Mourns the Death of her Past Life Husband

When Oma Devi’s two sons heard about Nagina’s claims of a prior incarnation in which she set herself on fire, they came to visit her. Nagina shared with them details of Oma’s life that were not known outside the family. Based on this testimony, Oma Devi’s elder son became convinced that Nagina was his mother reborn. The younger son did not know what to make of the situation.

The families maintained contact. In April 1996, when Nagina was 5 and a half years old, Oma Devi’s husband died. Despite the conflicts that Oma and her husband had, Nagina was very upset about the death of her past life husband.

Past Life Birthmarks

Dr. Pasricha noted that Nagina had hyper-pigmented or dark colored birthmarks on her chin and lower abdomen, which could have been related to burns incurred by Oma Devi.

Validity of Nagina’s Past Life Story

In commenting on the credibility of the case, Dr. Pasricha noted that it was very unlikely that Nagina’s family would fabricate a reincarnation case that went against their religion, especially one that involves suicide. Though Shiite Muslims are open to reincarnation, Sunni Muslims, the branch of Islam that Nagina’s family belonged to, do not accept reincarnation. Recall that Nagina’s family tried to suppress her talk of a past lifetime though physical punishment.

Dr. Pasricha also commented that it was unlikely that as a one year old Nagina would have learned of Oma Devi’s death and that it was even more unlikely that a family would teach a child to pretend committing suicide. (1)

Change in Religion: Oma Devi was Hindu, but she was reborn into a Sunni Muslim family that did not believe in reincarnation.

Past Life Birthmarks or Scars: Nagina had dark-colored birthmarks on her chin and abdomen, which Dr. Pasricha noted could be related to burn scars incurred by Oma Deva in her suicide.

Relationships Renewed through Reincarnation: Oma Devi reincarnated in close proximity to her past life home, which allowed her to be reunited with her past life family. Though Oma Devi committed suicide after an argument with her husband, Nagina expressed grief when her past life husband died.

Reincarnation & Suicide: Oma Devi committed suicide but reincarnated a little over 3 years after her death, demonstrating that suicide does not end the evolution of the soul. Oma Devi likely generated karma from the pain she caused others, which she may have to experience herself in the course of time. Also, Nagina may face similar circumstances as Oma Devi did, but she will need to react in more productive ways. The Life and Death of Hardevbaksh Singh

2 Hindu to Muslim Reincarnation-ElephantHardevbaksh Singh lived in Phargana, a town in the northern Indian district of Shahajahanpur. He was Hindu and a member of the Thakur caste, one of the higher castes or classes in India.

Hardevbaksh was a landowner and raised cattle. His cousin owned an elephant.

When he was about 70 years old, a fight erupted when his distant cousins alleged that Hardevbaksh’s cattle had trespassed onto their fields. Even a son of Hardevbaksh sided with the cousins in this dispute. The group attacked Hardevbaksh and killed him. He died on March 21, 1961.

Hardevbaksh, a Hindu, Reincarnates as a Muslim

Nasruddin Shah was born about a year later in April 1962 into a poor Sunni Muslim family, in the town of Allahaganj, which is about 10 kilometers or 6 miles from Phargana.

At the age of 2, Nasruddin started to talk about a past life in which he was a Thakur. He said that he died in a fight and that one of his sons was among the murderers.

One day, an elephant came to Allahagnj whose rider was from Phargana. Nasruddin claimed that the elephant was his. Nasruddin’s story that he was killed in a fight by one of his own sons and his claim to the elephant thus reached the community in Phargana. The widow of Hardevbaksh Singh heard of Nasruddin’s statements and along with one of her sons, she traveled to meet Nasruddin.

The Life and Death of Mushir Ali, a Sunni Muslim

His family was Sunni Muslim and his father, Haider Ali, was very religious, dedicating himself to praying for others and living off of alms or donations. The family spoke the Urdu language, which is common among Muslim people in the area.

Mushir Ali was the primary breadwinner for the family, selling vegetables and fruits at area markets. In the early morning of June 30, 1980, Mushir was taking mangoes to the market in Lucklow in a horse cart that he had rented. A little over 2 kilometers from Kakori, his horse cart collided with a tractor and Mushir suffered fractures of the ribs on the right side of his body, succumbing to his injuries almost instantly. He was 25 years old when he died.

Naresh Kumar was born in February 1981, less than a year after Mushir Ali died, in the village of Bazbagar, which was also in the district of Lucknow. His father’s name was Guruprasad and his mother was Bishwana. The family was Hindu of the lower middle class. Nasir was born with a birth defect, a depressed area near the middle of the chest, slightly on the right side.

Naresh would do this alone and he if he noticed other people watching him, he would stop.

Past Life Behavior and Xenoglossy-A Language from a Prior Lifetime

Naresh also would play by pretending to drive a horse cart. He would tie a rope to a cot, which served as the cart, and he would make sounds as if he was instructing horses to proceed.

In addition, Naresh was heard speaking a few words of Urdu, a language that his family did not speak. As such, this constitutes a case of xenoglossy, in which an individual can speak a language from a past lifetime which was not learned in the contemporary lifetime.

When he was 4 years old Naresh elaborated further about a past lifetime, stating that he was carrying mangoes in his horse cart when it collided with a vehicle and he died. Haider Ali, the father of Mushir Ali, would travel to Bazbagar every Thursday to pray for villagers and to collect alms or donations. After Naresh learned to walk, he would follow Haider Ali around the village, claiming that he was his father. Naresh would even call Haider Ali “Abba,” which means father, and he told Haider Ali that he wanted to go home with him.

Naresh kept insisting that his family to take him to Kakori. Bishwana, Naresh’s mother, decided to ask Haider Ali for his assistance, since he was from Kakori, as well as a Muslim. Haider Ali did not seem to want to get involved and instead advised Bishwana to take Naresh to the grave of a Muslim saint in Mazar, so that the boy would stop talking about his previous life. The family did so but it did not have any effect, as Naresh continued to enjoy talking about his past lifetime. Naresh also insisted on going to his previous home and once even started going down the road by himself to go there.

Dr. Pasricha speculated that at this point in time, Haider Ali likely knew that Naresh was claiming to be his deceased son Mushir Ali reborn, but was afraid to say anything due to concern of being criticized by his Muslim community, which did not believe in reincarnation.

Naresh finds his Past Life Home and Identifies Past Life Relatives & Friends

Guruprasad, Naresh’s father, finally decided to take him to Kakori. They were accompanied by some friends. Once in Kakori, Naresh led the group to the house where Mushir Ali lived. Inside the house, he identified several objects that belonged to Mushir, including Mushir’s cap and contents of Mushir’s suitcase.

Naresh also recognized and named members of Mushir’s immediate family, relatives and friends. He also accurately told the Ali family about a bank account that the family had at the time that Mushir died. Further, Naresh mentioned the name of a person who owed money to Mushir, which the family verified. The Ali family added that this individual who owed money paid it back after Mushir’s death.

Reincarnation, Past Lives & Birth Defects

Based on the accurate identifications and statements made by Naresh, the Ali family, including Haidar Ali, accepted Naresh as the reincarnation of Mushir Ali. In retrospect, Dr. Pasricha hypothesized that the birth defect that Naresh was born with on the right side of his chest reflected the trauma and rib fractures that Mushir Ali incurred in the tractor accident which killed him. Principles of Reincarnation & Understanding Past Lives

Change in Religion: Mushir Ali was Muslim, but reincarnated into a Hindu family.

Past Life Talent & Behavior: As a child, Naresh would pretend that he was driving a horse cart. In addition, he would pray in the Muslim style.

Geographic Memory: Once brought to Kakori, Naresh was able to lead his group to his past life home and the family of Haider Ali.

Xenoglossy: Naresh was heard speaking Urdu, a language that was used by the Muslim community, but not in Naresh’s family. As such, this represents a case of xenoglossy, where a language from a past lifetime is retained in a subsequent lifetime.

Reincarnation & Birth Defects: Naresh had a depression on his chest wall which seemed to reflect the broken ribs that Mushir incurred when struck and killed by a tractor.

Relationships Renewed through Reincarnation: Naresh was reunited with his past life family, the family of Haider Ali, who accepted Naresh as the reincarnation of their deceased son, Mushir Ali.
